Mississippi College Academics

While attending Mississippi College I have experienced the difficulty of the academics firsthand and have grown as a person because of it. I feel like I have learned a lot in my three semesters here and feel that I will continue to grow as a student. The classroom size is perfect because they are small enough to be able to get one on one time with the professor. This is important when I am trying to focus and do well in a class because I can discuss a problem I might have to my professor and get some help to improve in the class. Studying is something that coming to Mississippi College I have learned is something that must be done. In high school, I did not have to study very much and could get by with just listening in class. I cannot do that at MC and this is a credit to the difficulty of the courses at the college.

Accounting is feeling pretty difficult since the class is starting to get into full force. The first test is soon and I feel like I will have to devote a lot of time to studying for the test to do my best and succeed. Since Accounting is my major I really hope and plan to do well in the class as well as the test. This business field is one reason why I decided to come to MC and it is something I should do well at if genetics means anything in terms of skills because my mother is an Accounting professor at Macon State. I am enjoying the class so far and feel like I am learning a lot. It is one of those classes that is useful because I will use this information in the future with taxes and payments I have due.

Deciding on classes to take at the college is difficult because there are so many great choices, but I have to choose based on my major since those are the classes that should be my main focus. Some classes are more fun than others, but I have learned something in every class I have been in and I hope that this will remain to be true in the upcoming future. Another difficult thing to do is when to take a class and how many hours to take. I think the more hours the better because if a problem arises then I can drop a class and still keep my scholarship and maintain full time status as a student. These are just a few things that I have learned since coming to MC because I have learned from trial and error what works best for me in terms of schedule.

This Weekend

This weekend I had to play over five hours of tennis in one day. That's a lot of tennis and it goes without saying that my body is tired. The sun was not that bad, but I was in it all day Friday. I got to Tyler, Texas about 4:30 in the afternoon on Thursday. Coach had to get there for a meeting at 5 and then some of us were supposed to play at 6 or later that evening. The ride was not that bad, but it does get a little stuffy on one of those buses. Most of the team did not have to play Thursday evening and those that did lost sadly. After they lost, they were out of the tournament in doubles and we went out to eat somewhere in Tyler. On Friday, everyone had to wake up at 6:20 to eat breakfast and prepare to leave for the sites of our tennis matches that morning. I had to play at 8 and I won that match fairly easily, but I did not have time to eat before I played again. The next match I played lasted over 3 hours. I lost it and my body and energy lever were both drained considerably. That evening my doubles partner and I had to play our opening doubles match against a tough opponent. We lost, but were outplayed and were not playing well at all.

The intense workout my body took and the fact that I lost affected me emotionally. It was something that if I were not used to losing and playing long matches for Mississippi College I might have thrown a tantrum. When my body gives out in tennis, I feel really weak and the fact that I was the last one to lose at this tournament last year did not help at all. It is very tough to go from doing very well one year to not doing anywhere near as well the next. This is just an example of how coming to Mississippi College and playing a full year with similar conditions helped me deal with this emotionally. It also helps that my coach did not yell at me because he could see that I gave my all and kept fighting and trying to win even though it was very unlikely that I would win.

This experience also has left my body drained and today I do not feel well at all. Emotionally it is difficult to deal with being unwell and wanting to play tennis to improve. I have had to deal with this often, but Mississippi College has helped me see that I have a lot of support and prayer that I will make a quick recovery and get back on the court to prepare for the next tournament. The next tournament is special to me because my family will be attending and I want to do my best for them. All of the things I have learned at Mississippi College will come into play because it is tough to not get on the court to prepare for a tournament that my family will be attending, but the lessons I have learned in college will suit me well.

About me

Hi, my name is Cory Seay. I'm from Warner Robins, GA. Writing is not my favorite thing to do, but I enjoy typing and expressing myself in various ways. I'm a huge UGA fan and really hope that they do well in football this fall. Tennis is my favorite sport and I have been playing it since I was really little. It's something that I have learned a lot from. Discipline and being able to be independent and solve problems as well as wakeup at the crack of dawn come in handy in college. I play on the tennis team at Mississippi College. My family is very important to me and next to God they are my life. I have a little brother, Cameron, and my loving parents. They all baby me too much, but they only do it because they care. College has been a great experience and I have met a lot of great people. Shawreth, the service club that I'm in at MC, has been great for me because I have grown socially, spiritually, and emotionally since joining the club.

God is my main focus and He has been a guiding light in my life. I personally feel that I would not be here if He were not in my life. The church I attend is First Presbyterian Jackson. I love the church because the preaching is amazing and it is very traditional. The church is fairly strict with the dress code, but the people are very friendly and the pastor is amazing and it is advised that you bring a pen and paper to take notes. He thoroughly goes over every verse he reads and makes the message from the Bible come to life. This is one reason why I chose this church since I am not a Presbyterian.

I love to spend time with my friends and will play just about anything sports wise. Energetic and playful are two words that describe me fairly well because I can play sports all day and spending time with my friends in general is a past time. Meeting new people is fun and interesting because we are all different and it is always great to be around people that differ from me. This is one reason why I enjoy being a Shawreth because we are all different and have different ideas, but enjoy being with each other. I consider this a strength and something we enjoy because it keeps things interesting because variety is the spice of life.
