Since coming to Mississippi College I have realized how important service is. I love to help out whenever and however I can so this was great news for me. Shawreth, the service club I am in, is known for doing lots of service projects to help the community. This is one reason why I rushed it and why I enjoy service so much. Helping people is something I feel that everyone should do because we all are lucky to be able to live the way we do. Americans have one of the top economies of the world and also the best standard of living. Service is also something that is talked about in the Bible. We are supposed to serve those who have nothing and help them. Because this is a Christian college this is an aspect that is very important and should be something that everyone takes seriously.
Service can be anything from spending time with a Habitat for Humanity build to helping a child with their schoolwork. I helped with a build twice last year because I enjoy doing service as a group. It is great for bonding in the club and it is nice to be able to help those who really need housing. Helping build the house was tough, but it was very rewarding because I could see that I was making a difference and I could see the progress on the house. Another service project that I participated in was a canned food drive. This was something is that is also important because there are several people in this country who are starving everyday. I feel so spoiled that I get to eat whenever and however much I want. Food is a necessity that many people go without so I was glad to pitch in and help buy some canned goods for some needy people.
By doing service projects and helping others, I feel I have grown as a person. It has helped shape me into a more caring and understanding individual. To be able to relate to people you have to see and experience what they are going through. Helping others is easy, but we as people need to try to spend as much time as we can doing our part to make our community a better place one step at a time. It's best to start helping the community and then spread out into the state, country, and then world. Service is important, but it is something that has to be in your heart or it will not make a difference.
